Evacuating from a natural disaster is stressful – especially if you have health issues. For those evacuated from forest fires, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Harvey or facing evacuation over the rest of hurricane season, here are some ways to stay healthy when regular resources are scarce.
- Tune In: Emergency information and news updates will be available on radio, television, social media and online. These are invaluable resources for knowing how long you’ll have to be self-reliant.
- Keep Your Eyes Peeled: Look for first responders and disaster relief officials. These heroes will know exactly where health care and emergency services are available.
- Make a Plan: Bring all prescription medications with you, because it might be a while before you can go home. If you’re still evacuated, ask an emergency official if there are over-the-counter alternatives to assist you until the situation normalizes.
