Cognitive Reserve: 2 Words You Need to Know That May Help Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

Let's discuss the important epidemic that is plaguing our nation – Alzheimer's disease. According to the Alzheimer's Association, five million people in the U.S. are living with this diagnosis and that number is set to increase to 13.5 million by the year 2050. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, however, more and more research is showing that there are potential ways to slow the progression and, furthermore, ways to decrease the onset of memory loss.

Cognitive reserve refers to an abundance of synapses in the brain. A higher reserve is found to provide a greater threshold before clinical deficit, or symptoms such as memory loss, appears. Improve cognitive reserve by:

  • learning a new language
  • watching an educational program
  • engaging in mindful movement
