Alzheimer's Disease: How to Protect Your Brain From Alzheimer's With Lifestyle Changes!

My grandmother had Alzheimer's, a disease that affects the brain. The number of people with the disease in the U.S. is currently at 5 million and rapidly rising. I was happy to hear what Dr. Rudy Tanzi, director of the Alzheimers Genome Project and a leading researcher in the field at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said in an interview on "CBS This Morning." He said that we are still years away from developing a drug to prevent or reverse this devastating disease. However, there are four important lifestyle categories that we can work on to help protect our brain:

  • Diet: A Mediterranean-type diet (lots of vegetables, olive oil and moderate protein consumption) and probiotics.
  • Exercise: At least an hour-long brisk walk (8,000-10,000 steps).
  • Sleep: Adults need 7-8 hours.
  • Stress Reduction: Meditation was the top recommendation.
