Bipolar Disorder: FDA-Approved Treatments May Help With Symptoms

Bipolar disorder causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels and the lack of ability to do everyday tasks – and it can feel like living life on a roller coaster. Though there is no cure for this disorder, medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can treat symptoms and help people feel better.

But proper diagnosis is important. “A doctor can complete a medical history, physical exam and laboratory exam to rule out physical conditions that may cause similar symptoms. If symptoms are not caused by other illnesses, the doctor may then provide a referral to a mental health professional,” says Dr. Mitchell Mathis, director of the Division of Psychiatry Products at the FDA.
