Can Stress Make You Fat & Keep You Overweight? Read What a Study Found!

A study published in the journal Obesity confirmed that people with higher levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, as measured in their hair, had higher body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. People who have been obese over a period of time also had higher levels of cortisol. They can’t say for sure if chronically high levels of cortisol are a cause or an effect of being overweight. However, we do know that when people are stressed they tend to eat more carbs, sweets and other high-calorie comfort foods.

Other research has pointed to the inability to lose weight being linked to high stress levels. You can’t avoid all stress in your life, but you can work to lessen its affects. Try:

  • yoga
  • breathing
  • meditation

Love you Elisa, but seriously! I am on a very restrictive diet. No inflammatory foods, no sugar, no nothing! And not a pound. I am doing everything right. It HAS to be the stress in my life!! It's that four letter word..."W---"
Meredith Schneider
Awesome info and great reminder! Taking a break for lots of deep breaths has so helped me in stressful situations. Thanks for sharing Nicole DeAvilla ;)

I hear you, Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP - it is frustrating when the weight won't come off. And I agree, stress is a huge cause of this. Meredith Schneider is so right- we have to pause and breathe and care for ourselves, without food. Self care! Hugs, my friend! XOXO

Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP , Meredith Schneider and Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds - This is something that I have known for awhile and I even have to remind myself! We must be patient with ourselves, and keep on breathing! Mindy - a regular pranayama/breathing practice can help with inflammation too.
