Safe Sleep for Babies: 7 Ways to Reduce the Risk of SIDS From the AAP!

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released safe sleep recommendations to protect against SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Here are some of the recommendations!

  • Infants should sleep in the same bedroom as their parents (for 6 months to a year), but on a separate surface, such as a crib or bassinet.
  • Infants should never sleep on a couch, armchair or soft surface.
  • Place Baby on his or her back on a firm sleep surface with a tight-fitting sheet.
  • Avoid use of soft bedding, including crib bumpers, blankets, pillows and soft toys.
  • Offer a pacifier at naptime and bedtime.
  • Do not use home monitors or commercial devices, including wedges or positioners, marketed to reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • Of note is room sharing is recommended, for at least first 6 months.
