Does Your Teen Use E-cigarettes? What You Need to Know About Vaping!

University of Southern California (USC) study of high school students suggests that some teens who never would have smoked cigarettes are using e-cigarettes. USC professor Rob McConnell, senior author of the study, asserts that vaping “by youth who would not otherwise have smoked … may result in exposure to nicotine that can damage the adolescent brain.” USC researchers concluded that:

  • Ninth graders who vape are more likely to smoke cigarettes.
  • Teens with moderate mental health issues who may not have considered smoking cigarettes are vaping.
  • Vapor from e-cigarettes contains toxic metals.

According to Jessica Barrington-Trimis, lead author and USC postdoctoral research associate, “…for youth who have never used any other tobacco products, nicotine experimentation could become nicotine addiction.”
