Kids & Drownings: 3 Safety Tips to Help Prevent Child In-Home Drownings

Every year, nearly 90 kids drown inside the home, and two-thirds of these deaths occur in the bathtub. A child can drown in as little as 2 inches of water, and it can happen quickly and silently. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has launched a campaign about in-home drowning and says every one of these tragedies is preventable.

  • Never leave a child alone in the bathtub or near any container of water.
  • Always cover or close washing machines and in-home spas and hot tubs when not in use.
  • Always empty water from sinks, pains, coolers and containers.
