Quick & Easy Shrimp Stir Fry Recipe With Broccoli & Orange Ginger Sauce by Jan Mostrom

Quick & Easy Shrimp Stir Fry Recipe With Broccoli & Orange Ginger Sauce

I have a go-to stir-fry recipe I've made for years, but when I saw this easy shrimp stir-fry recipe I just had to try it. I love the fresh and light ingredients in this Asian stir fry, and I hope you will, too.

For this shrimp recipe, you'll need two oranges (or one orange and orange juice), fresh ginger, garlic, a sweetener (or leave it out), sesame oil, soy sauce or a substitute, cornstarch, shrimp, chicken or tofu, broccoli, red onion, and optional crushed red chile flakes and jasmine rice. (I love Trader Joe's frozen rice packets. They are ready to go in four minutes and taste great!)

Feel free to make this Asian-inspired shrimp recipe your own. Try adding crispy tofu or chicken. To save time buy pre-cut broccoli, onion and shelled shrimp. I usually have frozen shelled uncooked shrimp in my freezer. All you need to do is run warm water over it and it's ready to cook in minutes! This is a really forgiving recipe so just feel free to put your own stamp on it!

Serve this flavorful shrimp stir fry over jasmine rice or grain of your choice. This is a great meal-prep recipe, too.

Cuisine: Asian
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 orange, zested
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon chopped ginger (divided)
  • 3 - 4 cloves garlic, minced (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup tamari, soy sauce or Braggs Liquid Aminos
  • generous pinch of crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 10 - 12 ounces shrimp (thawed, peeled and deveined) or use tofu or chicken
  • 6 cups broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced

Here's how to make it:

  1. In a small jar or bowl combine orange juice, orange zest, 1 tablespoon ginger, 2 garlic cloves, maple syrup, sesame oil, tamari (or soy sauce), crushed red pepper flakes and cornstarch. Put lid on and give it a good shake and set aside.
  2. Lightly salt shrimp. Heat up a pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add oil to coat. Add shrimp and 1 teaspoon ginger and 1/2 teaspoon garlic. Cook the shrimp about 45 seconds on each side. Remove from pan and cool. Remove tails and set aside.
  3. Add broccoli to the pan with more oil, if needed. Stir fry for about 5 minutes. Add red onion and sauté another 3 minutes. (I put a cover over the pan to make sure the broccoli and onion were firm tender.)
  4. Add the sauce, stirring for 1 minute, until it bubbles.
  5. Add the shrimp and stir for another minute or until shrimp is done. Add more tamari, if needed. Remove from heat. Garnish with green onions and crushed red chili flakes, if desired.
