Old-Fashioned Amish Butter Cookies Recipe Is Simply Irresistible (3 Ingredients, 25 Minutes)

In a complicated world, sometimes you just need the simple things in life. And it doesn't get much simpler than these old-fashioned, three-ingredient Amish butter cookies.

Three ingredients? Yep! That's all you need to make soft, moist Amish butter cookies. These cookies mix up in one bowl so the prep work is a cinch. You can have a plateful of cookies ready to be enjoyed in less than 30 minutes.

These easy three-ingredient Amish butter cookies are made with butter (of course!), granulated sugar and all-purpose flour. You beat the softened butter and sugar together until it becomes pale yellow in color. Next, you stir in the flour until combined. Then, you roll the dough into balls and the flatten them on a cookie sheet. Bake the low-sodium cookies for 16 to 18 minutes (ovens vary) and cool before piling them on a plate.

Serve these soft cookies for dessert or as a quick, sweet snack anytime. They are simply irresistible!

Recipe Notes

  • The number of cookies will depend on how much batter you use for each cookie.
  • You can use your fingers to flatten the cookies, or get fancy with a spoon or fork.
  • Store the leftover cookies in an airtight container to keep them soft and fresh.
  • You could stir a little extract into the batter. Vanilla extract, lemon extract and almond extract would add a beautiful flavor and aroma.

Here's how to make them:

  1. Beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy and butter has turned pale yellow. Add the flour and stir to combine.
  2. Roll the dough into balls and flatten them on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake in a preheated 325-degree F oven for about 16 to 18 minutes or until just set. Remove from the oven and cool a few minutes before removing from cookie sheet to cool completely.

Sounds too simple to mess up these cookies. Nice.

1/2 cup of butter is two sticks. So, does this require 1 or 2 sticks of butter? Asking because I CAN mess up even the simplest recipes, and I really want to make these!
Elisa Schmitz
Hi Mary O'Connell Robb ! One stick of butter equals 1/2 cup (or 8 tablespoons). This recipe calls for 1/2 cup of butter, or 1 stick. Enjoy the cookies and let us know how this recipe turns out for you!

I have tried, unsucessfully, to make this recipe twice. It would not form a dough, but remained crumbly and difficult to make balls. Next time, I will try two sticks of butter. That might hold the flour together to form a dough.
