Copycat Cole Slaw Recipe: This Famous Fried Chicken Restaurant Cole Slaw Is a Fan Favorite

Be honest: do you ever cook or bake something that you don’t particularly like? I’m a bit of a picky eater so I do! For example, everyone raves about my mom’s meatloaf, but I simply don’t eat meatloaf. I also don’t eat cole slaw, but my husband and boys love it.

The term "cole slaw" originated from the Dutch expression "koosla," which means "cabbage salad." My mom makes homemade cole slaw, which she tends to call cabbage salad, and my boys love hers. They also seem to love fast-food cole slaw, which I find amusing. They either want to eat homemade slaw at Mimi’s house or get it at the drive-thru! My boys' favorite is KFC’s.

Here’s a copycat KFC recipe that tastes just like their fast food favorite. Serve as a side dish or on a burger or sandwich.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 20 minutes plus overnight to marinate
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes plus overnight to marinate
Servings: Makes about 10 cups

Ingredients

Cole Slaw

  • 8 cups cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup carrots, finely chopped
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons yellow onion, very finely minced

Dressing

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Chop the vegetables very fine, to about the size of rice. Set aside.
  2. Combine all the ingredients for the dressing in a large bowl. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Add cabbage, carrots and onion to large bowl with dressing. Mix until everything is well coated. Cover and refrigerate overnight. For the best results, stir occasionally.
