Japanese Hojicha Latte Recipe: A Low-Caffeine Green Tea Drink

I love – OK, am obsessed with – chai lattes. However, sometimes I like to mix things up and I’m all for saving money and time at the drive-thru. Here’s a great latte recipe to add to the other latte recipes I’ve shared that you can make at home!

A light, yet rich, beverage, this creamy Hojicha latte is made from Japanese roasted green tea leaves (the name Hōjicha comes from a Japanese verb which roughly translates as ‘to roast’). It’s a great alternative to coffee and other caffeinated drinks as it’s low in caffeine and tastes great, too.

Cuisine: Japanese
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Servings: 1

Ingredients

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Place Hojicha leaves in a tea strainer, and place strainer into a coffee mug. Pour in the boiling water and allow to steep for around 3 minutes, until darkened.
  2. While the tea steeps, warm your milk in the microwave for 45 seconds. Optional: For a light and airy latte, froth the milk.
  3. Remove the tea strainer from your mug and pour in warmed milk. Add sweetener and/or sprinkle with cinnamon, if desired. Serve hot.
