3-Ingredient Saskatoon Jam Recipe: This Canadian Recipe Has an Identity Crisis

Saskatoon berries are a Canadian thing. The berries change their name at the border. In Michigan and Minnesota these small berries are known as juneberries – and some call them serviceberries. Whatever you call them, this jam recipe is the perfect way to get to know them.

This Canadian recipe has just three ingredients and takes about 30 minutes to prepare. If you want a hint of vanilla in your saskatoon jam, add the vanilla right at the end of cooking. Spread this jam on toast, biscuits, English muffins, pancakes, waffles, crepes or spoon over vanilla ice cream.

Cuisine: Canadian
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Servings: Makes 1 large jar or 2 small jars

Ingredients

  • 2 cups saskatoon berries (serviceberries, juneberries)
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put 1 cup of the berries into a saucepan and mash with a potato masher or back of a wooden spoon.
  2. Pour in the remaining berries, sugar and lemon juice. Over medium heat, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and gently simmer until it reaches 220 degrees F on a candy thermometer, about 25 minutes.
  3. Stir in the vanilla, if using. Pour into clean or sterilized jars. Cool on the counter before refrigerating
