Queen Elizabeth's Favorite Gaelic Steaks Recipe From the Former Royal Chef by Donna John

The death of Queen Elizabeth ll has saddened people across the globe. King Charles III says this is a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.

One way we know to pay respects and celebrate those who have passed is through food. While it's been reported that the Queen was not a foodie, she did have some favorite dishes. One of those was Gaelic steaks.

Former Royal Chef Darren McGrady was Queen Elizabeth's private chef for over 15 years. He released a video showing the world how to make the Queen's favorite steak recipe. Chef McGrady says the Queen liked her steaks with a thick, creamy sauce and organic vegetables

Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth.

Cuisine: British
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil or butter (divided)
  • 4 beef tenderloin steaks (about 6 ounces each)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped (8 ounces)
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped
  • 3 ounces sliced baby bella mushrooms
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 chicken bouillon cube dissolved in 1/2 pint (8 ounces) boiling water or 1/2 pint fresh homemade chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon Marmite
  • 2 tablespoons whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Here's how to make it:

  1. Season the steaks with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a hot skillet. Add the steaks and cook over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a plate and keep warm.
  2. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the skillet over low heat. Add the onion and cook until soft. Add the mushrooms and garlic. Cook until mushrooms are soft.
  3. Stir in the whiskey, cream, chicken broth and Marmite. Increase the heat and cook to reduce the liquid. When you reach a nice consistency, remove the sauce from the heat. Taste and adjust seasonings. Add the juices from the steaks and the parsley. Serve the sauce over the steaks. Garnish with more parsley.

Note: Marmite is a savory British spread made with yeast. If you can't find Marmite, substitute miso, Vegemite, soy sauce or nutritional yeast.

I was heartbroken to hear about the Queen's passing. Even though she was 96, she was aging so gracefully and I thought she'd live til 100. What an amazing woman. Strength and grace, always. Thank you for sharing this, Donna John . So special to remember her through her chef and a favorite recipe!

My condolences to the people of the UK upon hearing of the Queen's passing. Although she is 96 years old, she is still charming and I think she will live on in everyone's hearts forever. What a wonderful woman.
