Grandma’s Sugar Cookie Recipe Just Got Better: Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies Made Easier

You may remember your mom or grandma rolling out sugar cookies. You may even remember the taste and associate them with a certain time of year. Well, here’s a delicious old-fashioned cookie recipe made easier.

Instead of rolling out the dough and cutting it into shapes, you roll the dough into balls, then roll them in sugar and stick them in the oven. Easy peasy with all the same sugary, buttery deliciousness.

The simple sugar cookie recipe is made with butter, granulated sugar, eggs, cream of tartar, baking soda, vanilla extract, salt and flour. The cookies are rolled into balls and then rolled into granulated sugar before being baked to tender perfection. Serve these cookies as a snack or for dessert. You could even let your kids decorate them as a fun family activity.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 30 minutes plus 2 hours to chill
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours and 40 minutes
Servings: Makes about 4 dozen

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar (for batter)
  • 1/4 - 1/3 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

Here's how to make it:

  1. Using an electric mixer, beat softened butter in a large bowl on medium to high speed for 30 seconds.
  2. Add 1 1/2 cups sugar and beat until combined.
  3. Beat in eggs, cream of tartar, baking soda, vanilla and salt until combined.
  4. Mix in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer, then stir in the remaining flour by hand. Cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours.
  5. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in 1/4 cup sugar to coat. Place dough balls on an ungreased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake in a preheated 375-degree F oven for 9 to 12 minutes or until light brown. Let cool before serving.
