Amish Funeral Pie Recipe: A Sweet Raisin Pie Recipe With a Story

Funeral pie, also called raisin pie, was served at Amish and Old Order Mennonite gatherings for friends and family after a funeral. When someone passed away – friend, family, neighbor – a raisin pie would be baked and given as a gift to pay last respects.

Similar to mincemeat pie, this raisin pie recipe is sweet and full of flavor. Don't wait to make it! Let's shine a different happy light on this easy fruit pie recipe.

Cuisine: American

Here's how to make it:

  1. Combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, allspice, salt and cornstarch in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. Put the raisins and water into a saucepot. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until raisins plump up.
  3. Add the sugar mixture and cook, stirring, until mixture bubbles. Add the vinegar and butter and cook until butter melts. Let the mixture cool.
  4. Line the bottom of a pie plate with the bottom crust. Pour the filling into the pie shell. Cover with the top pie crust. Cut a few slits or make a lattice design.
  5. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 25 to 35 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool before serving.
