4-Ingredient Chicken a la Crème Recipe: A Comfort Food Recipe From France

Chicken a la king fans, do we have a chicken recipe you need to try! Chicken a la Crème (chicken in cream) is a French dish that's similar to our chicken a la king. It's a classic comfort food dish made with chicken, cream and a little butter.

This is not a recipe you want to make every day. This French recipe isn't low in calories, cholesterol or fat, so save it for cheat days if you are watching what you eat. (Everything in moderation!)

Serve this creamy chicken recipe over rice or alone with crusty French bread. No one would frown upon a fresh salad either! If you have leftovers, add a little more cream to them when reheating.

Recipe Notes

  • With this easy Chicken a la Crème recipe, you have the option to add some vegetables – either carrots or potatoes. Be sure to cut them in a very small dice so they look quickly. But this is optional!
  • If you find you want a thicker sauce, simply stir in a little cornstarch or flour at the end.
  • This is a mild dish, so if you want more flavor, add some garlic salt, garlic powder or seasoned salt.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Cook in the butter until golden brown on all sides, about 8 minutes (the chicken will not be fully cooked through yet). If using potatoes or carrots, cook along with the chicken.
  2. Put the remaining butter into the pan. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook about 5 more minutes.
  3. Add the heavy cream and simmer on low for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until sauce thickens, stirring often. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

The cream hasn't thickened. Not sure if I did something wrong...or if this recipe is missing something?
Donna John
You may not have cooked it long enough. Because this recipe doesn't use a thickener, like flour or cornstarch, you need to cook it until it thickens on its own. The French way! Hope this helped.
Gwen Johnson
This has a thinner sauce. It's delicious. My kids love it.
