McDonald's Shamrock Shake® Copycat Recipe: This St. Patrick's Day Drink Is So Refreshing

What are you drinking on St. Patrick's Day? One of the best St. Patrick's Day treats just may be the mint milkshake, which was created and launched into popular culture by McDonald's as the Shamrock Shake® in 1967. According to McDonald's, the Shamrock Shake® was created by Hal Rosen, "a Connecticut McDonald’s owner and operator who made the delicious, mint shake in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. It later debuted in select locations across the U.S. in 1970, and was an instant success."

You can make your own version of a Shamrock Shake® dessert at home. It's really easy (and more decadent than a smoothie), and makes the perfect St. Patricks' Day dessert!

To make this cold and creamy copycat mint milkshake recipe you will need vanilla ice cream, whole milk, peppermint extract and food coloring. The whipped cream topping and mint leaf garnish are optional. The ingredients are blended in a blender until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and top with whipped cream and mint leaves, if you like. How fun!

This festive ice cream recipe is so easy and delicious, you may decide to make it all year round as a refreshing snack or dessert!

Recipe Notes

  • For a greener milkshake, add more food coloring. Four drops on the lighter side and six drops on the darker side.
  • You can use whole milk or nut milk or the milk of your choice. But it may affect how thick the milkshake turns out.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Add ice cream, milk, peppermint extract and food coloring to a blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into a pretty glass. Top with whipped cream and garnish with mint leaves, if desired. Serve with a straw or spoon (or both).
