Grandma's Scottish Shortbread Recipe: Old-fashioned Brown Sugar Shortbread Cookie Recipe Has Just 4 Ingredients

The three-ingredient Scottish shortbread recipe reminded me of a cookie my grandma made. After digging through her recipe box, I found her recipe for Scottish shortbread cookies. She didn't make these as often as her cinnamon cookies, but these sweet, tender cookies are still a fond memory.

Because of the brown sugar in this cookie recipe, the cookies are darker in color than your typical shortbread cookie. This four-ingredient recipe is nothing fancy, but it doesn't have to be if grandma made it.

Cuisine: Scottish / American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes, depending on oven
Total Time: 22 minutes

Ingredients

Here's how to make it:

  1. Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Beat until super creamy.
  2. Roll the dough into balls.
  3. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven on ungreased baking sheets for about 12 minutes or until browned around the edges.

Butter, sugar, flour - what more do you need in a cookie? YUM, Donna John !

Me again Donna John!
How BIG should the dough balls be? And the ones in the pic look like they've been crimped around the edge with a fork. 4 1/2c of flour + 1c butter etc is a LOT of dough. How many cookies can one expect to get?
It would be wonderful if you started adding the recipe yields to EVERY recipe. Thanks so much
Donna John
The recipe card from my grandma's recipe box is above, and the directions are very short and not detailed. Mine dough balls when making cookies are usually about 1 inch. The amount depends on how big you make your cookies. With 1-inch cookies, you could get around 3 1/2. to 4 dozen. Bigger, less, of course.

I've never done that before, but it may work. If you do it, please let us know how it turned out for you.
