Crispy Viennese Chicken Recipe: Buttery Lemon Chicken Ready in 20 Minutes

Viennese chicken is simply thin breaded fried chicken (think schnitzel) that's served with a lemony butter sauce. This easy Viennese chicken recipe is not only quick to make, but also simply delicious.

All you need to make this crispy chicken for your family is boneless chicken breasts, flour, eggs, breadcrumbs, lemons, butter and fresh rosemary or thyme. The chicken is breaded then quickly pan-fried until cooked through, juicy and golden brown. The simple three-ingredient lemon sauce is served with the hot fried chicken breasts.

This crispy Viennese chicken recipe is great served with rice to soak up the butter sauce. Imagine, a perfect Viennese dinner on the table in about 20 minutes. Ja!

Here's how to make it:

  1. To make the lemon butter, put the butter and herb of choice into a small saucepot. Cook over low heat until the butter melts. Add the lemon juice. (You can strain the butter mixture before serving, if desired.)
  2. Put the flour into one bowl, the eggs into another bowl and the panko into a third bowl.
  3. Heat a little oil in a skillet. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Dip the chicken into the flour, then into the eggs, then into the panko. Put the chicken into the hot oil. Squeeze some lemon juice over the chicken.
  4. Cook until the chicken is golden brown and crispy on both sides and cooked through, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove to a paper towel to drain.
  5. To serve, slice the chicken and serve with the lemon butter sauce.

We just had this for our dinner and it was delicious!! My wife is not a big fan of lemon on food but it's such a light touch of lemon that even she liked it! LOL! Served it with fried rice, green beans and the bread I baked the other day. Dessert will be the pineapple cake I made yesterday.
Elisa Schmitz
Oh my goodness, that looks delicious. There's some good eating happening at your house, Bill Heleine ! LOL. So glad you enjoyed the meal (and your wife, too). We appreciate all you share with us! Donna John

The pineapple cake recipe is from Donna John right here on 30 seconds!
Are you supposed to put butter sauce over the cooked chicken or use as dipping sauce?
Donna John
You use the butter as a dipping sauce. Though, you could pour it over when serving. Your choice! Hope you enjoy the recipe.
Bill Heleine
I drizzled it over the chicken on the plate.
Bill Heleine
That's the one Elisa! I'm not as good with the computer as some people! LOL!

You’re doing awesome, thank you! So what did you think of Donna John ’s pineapple cake? I’ve made it and I found it to be so moist and delish! 🍍 Bill Heleine

Out of this world!! I made a couple of additions. I put coconut in the cake and a touch of vanilla extract in the frosting. I also poked some holes in the cake before frosting since you top it while warm. That way the little bit of melting frosting will go in to the cake!
Elisa Schmitz
That’s genius! Now you’ve got me wanting to bake that cake your way this weekend!! 😍
