Easy Amish White Bread Recipe Is Old-fashioned Simple Goodness

In Amish homes, pretty much everything is made from scratch – including the bread. This easy Amish white bread recipe is simple to prepare and makes the most incredible sandwiches. If you've been thinking about trying your hand at baking bread, this traditional Amish recipe for white bread is a good place to start.

The Amish white bread is made with water, sugar, yeast, salt, vegetable oil and bread flour. The bread dough rises for a total of 1 1/2 hours, so plan accordingly if you're having a homemade bread craving. The dough is cut in half and put into two loaf pans (yes, you get two loaves of fresh, hot bread!) and baked for about 30 minutes or until golden.

What's the difference between bread flour and all-purpose flour? In one word: protein. Bread flour has more protein than all-purpose flour. More protein means more stability, form and rise in your dough, allowing it to rise higher and hold its shape better.

Enjoy the simple goodness of this homemade white bread.

Recipe Notes

  • You could cut this recipe in half and make one loaf.
  • Store the bread in an airtight container.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the warm water, sugar and yeast into a bowl. Stir to dissolve and let it sit until it foams and bubbles.
  2. Add the salt. Slowly start adding the flour, about a cup at a time, until a dough forms.
  3. Put the dough onto a floured work surface. Knead until smooth, then put the dough into an oiled bowl. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Take the dough out of the bowl and punch it down. Knead again for 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. Cut the dough in half and put into two oiled loaf pans. Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  6. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for about 30 minutes or until golden.
