Grandma's Company Chicken Recipe: An Old-fashioned 4-Ingredient Baked Chicken Recipe

This baked chicken recipe is one of the first meals I learned to cook. The thought of buying jarred dried beef was odd to me, but this old-fashioned company chicken recipe just works.

You could use boneless chicken, just be sure to reduce the cooking time. Serve over rice or mashed potatoes to soak up the rich sauce.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 0 minutes
Cook Time: 40 to 50 minutes
Total Time: 40 to 45 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 6 bone-in chicken thighs or your favorite chicken pieces (I used four huge chicken thighs)
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 jar (2.5 ounces) dried beef, chopped

Here's how to make it:

  1. Combine the sour cream, soup and dried beef in a casserole dish or baking pan.
  2. Put the chicken on top of the sour cream mixture. Sprinkle with black pepper and a little salt.
  3. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for about 40 to 50 minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Spoon some of the sauce over the chicken. Serve.

Is this one of them joke TikTok recipes? This is one of the most disgusting things for American food I have ever read. Gross.
Donna John
No, ma'am. It's a classic recipe. I've made this recipe so many times and it is delicious. Sorry it's not for you. Hope you'll find another recipe or two here that's to your liking. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Beverly Lodge

I’m just blown away that someone would think this is a “tik tok” video/post that might be a joke of some sort!! Please try it. Most recipes involving a cream soup are just beyond incredible!!

Sounds great. Whatever happened to "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything?" And by the way, I love your recipes. So simple but so delicious! Getting ready to make the key lime pie
Donna John
We are so happy to hear that, Lee Werry ! Enjoy the key lime pie!

We just put the chicken pieces in a baking dish and poured a can of cream of mushroom soup over it and baked at 350 for an hour.

My mom used to make baked chicken that way. She'd add some sliced onion, too, for a little crunch.

When I've used dried beef I had to rinse it first to remove some of the saltiness. Do you rinse it for this recipe? This sounds delicious
Donna John
No, I don't rinse the beef. This recipe is delicious! Hope you enjoy it.

I'll grant you that it's flavourful, and definitely comfort food. But I don't think it would be an everyday food. Too rich and creamy. Definitely high in fat and salt and cholesterol. But as I'm writing all this, as you can imagine, my mouth is watering with thinking of just how delicious it all is. I've got chicken in the freezer, dried beef in the cupboard and I've half a mind to run down to the corner grocery store for cream soup! 😋
Donna John
I agree it's not an everyday food. Everything in moderation! I say go to the store and get that soup! :-)

I line the bottom of a casserole dish with dried beef then pour soup/sour cream mix over chicken & bake. Delicious take. Refrigerate 2 hours before placing in cold oven & bake @ 350 degrees.
Donna John
Love that idea! Thanks for the tip. Will try that next time. NCshorewatcher

Can you make this in a slow cooker?
Donna John
Hmm. I've never tried that, but I don't see why not. Would think 4 hours on high would work. If you try it, please let us know how it turns out!

I'm not into cooking at all but I'm trying. This chicken looks wonderful. Thanks for posting it. It's simple enough for me to try. I'm 77 and still not a cook. lol

This is one of the very first recipes I ever learned to cook when I got married in 1989. I still love baked chicken recipes with minimal ingredients. Another new one coming this week!
