Recipe Notes

  • We like to squeeze our own fresh lemon juice, but you can use bottled in a pinch.
  • Use gluten-free flour if you'd like this recipe to be gluten-free.
  • Store leftover stew in a container in the refrigerator, or freeze for up to three months.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Heat the oil in a large soup pot. Add the beef and brown on all sides, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Add the onion, water, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, allspice and cloves. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and simmer gently for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the carrots and potatoes. (Add a little more water, if needed.) Cover and cook about 30 minutes more or until vegetables are tender.
  4. Whisk together the water and flour. Pour the mixture into the stew and stir. Cook until stew thickens, about 5 to 10 more minutes.
