Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 pounds boneless beef roast or steak, cut into cubes or stew meat
- 1 large onion, sliced or 2 cups pearl onions, cleaned
- 4 cups water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- pinch of allspice
- pinch of ground cloves
- 5 - 6 carrots, peeled and sliced
- 6 potatoes, cut into pieces
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1/4 cup flour
Here's how to make it:
- Heat the oil in a large soup pot. Add the beef and brown on all sides, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Add the onion, water, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, allspice and cloves. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and simmer gently for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Add the carrots and potatoes. (Add a little more water, if needed.) Cover and cook about 30 minutes more or until vegetables are tender.
- Whisk together the water and flour. Pour the mixture into the stew and stir. Cook until stew thickens, about 5 to 10 more minutes.
