15-Minute Thai Basil Chicken Stir-fry Recipe (Pad Krapow Gai) Is Yum

This pad krapow gai recipe is fast, flavorful and easy. In Thai, pad means "stir fried," krapow means "holy basil" and gai is "chicken." All those words combine into one amazingly flavorful Thai stir fry chicken recipe

This stir-fried holy basil chicken recipe is ready in 15 minutes and is just plain yum. The chicken thighs are cooked with shallots, garlic, Thai chiles and Thai basil. The sauce is made with broth, oyster sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce and brown sugar. When the two meet, it's a match made in heaven. 

Serve this easy Thai basil chicken stir fry with rice or noodles. This is a great meal prep recipe and perfect for lunch or dinner

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless chicken thighs, chopped into very small pieces, or 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup chopped shallots
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 - 3 fresh Thai chilies, chopped or left whole
  • 1 cup julienned Thai basil leaves
  • cooked rice, for serving

Sauce

  • 1/3 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons fish sauce
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar

Here's how to make it: 

  1. Combine all the sauce ingredients in a bowl. Whisk to combine. 
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the chicken and cook until just cooked through, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add the shallots, garlic and Thai chiles. Cook, stirring, about 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the sauce. Cook, stirring, about 2 to 3 minutes. 
  5. Add the basil. Cook for 30 seconds. Serve over rice.
