Amish Shoofly Pie Recipe: This Pennsylvania Dutch Shoofly Pie Is Bursting With Sweet Old-Fashioned Goodness

Here's a delicious pie recipe we can thank the Amish for. Shoofly pie is a Pennsylvania Dutch Amish recipe from the 1880s. The sweet pie with sugar and molasses was served for breakfast with coffee

This shoofly pie recipe is easy to make and will satisfy that sweet tooth for dessert, too. This pie is bursting with sweet old-fashioned goodness everyone will enjoy!

Cuisine: American/Amish
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

Servings: 1 pie

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the pie crust into the bottom of a deep dish pie plate (we suggest using a 10-inch deep pie plate). Flute the edges.
  2. Combine all the topping ingredients in a bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work it together until it's crumbly.
  3. To make the filling, combine the molasses, water and baking soda in a bowl. Mix well. Pour into the pie shell.
  4. Mix some of the topping mixture into the filling itself, to thicken filling. Spread the rest of the topping mixture over the filling until it is evenly covered.
  5. Bake in a preheated 450-degree F oven for about 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees F and continue baking about 20 more minutes or until set.

Has anyone made this pie the proportions seem to be off it is overrunning my deep dish pie plate and making a burnt mess in my oven going to let it go and will report back with end results. Had such high hopes, guessing it hasn't been tested, maybe I can tweek it.

You need at least a ten inch , deep dish pie plate. My nine inch , deep dish wasn't enough. Gotta go clean the oven will try again later , going to add 1/2 teaspoon of ginger to the topping.
Elisa A. Schmitz 30Seconds
That sounds like a delicious addition to the topping, Debra Beesley . Let us know how it turns out! (Hope the oven cleans up easily!)

So do you use baking powder or baking soda in this recipe
Elisa A. Schmitz 30Seconds
