Homemade Tahini Recipe: How to Make This Popular Middle Eastern Condiment (Just 2 Ingredients!)

Tahini is a paste made with toasted sesame seeds. While most of us use this creamy sesame paste to make hummus, tahini can be used in sauces, salad dressings, main dishes, desserts and even breakfast recipes. This easy homemade tahini recipe is easy to make and has just two ingredients. What's your favorite way to use tahini?

Fun fact: Tahini came from Persia, where it was called ardeh, then it moved to Israel. Only royalty and the rich could get the ingredients to make it, and some cultures even used it as currency. Who knew?

Cuisine: Middle Eastern
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

Servings: Makes about 1 cup

Ingredients

Here's how to make it:

  1. To toast the sesame seeds, put them into a skillet over low heat. Stir constantly until they begin to lightly brown and let off their aroma, about 4 to 5 minutes. Cool the seeds before proceeding.
  2. Put the cooled sesame seeds into a blender or food processor. Pulse until a sand-like paste forms, about 1 minute.
  3. Add 3 tablespoons of the oil and blend for about 2 minutes, scraping down the sides a couple times. If you want a thinner tahini, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and pulse until blended. Season with a little salt, if desired.
  4. Store the tahini in the refrigerator. Stir well before using.
