Dirty rice is a Cajun staple that's seen on tables all across the south. Don't let its name turn you off, because this down and dirty rice dish is delish and easy to make.

Ground beef is browned in a skillet before an onion, bell pepper, celery and garlic are added to soften. Cajun seasoning, rice and beef broth are introduced and the rice simmers for about 20 minutes or until cooked. Sprinkle on some chopped green onions and you have a flavor-packed, gluten-free side dish.

This easy dirty rice recipe pairs well with sausage, chicken, seafood, pork or beef – or you can serve it as a main dish. This recipe is perfect anytime, but with Mardi Gras season in full swing, it's a must-make ASAP.

Recipe Notes

  • You could use chicken broth in a pinch instead of beef broth.
  • Store the rice in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.
  • This rice would be a delicious stuffing for peppers.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Brown the ground beef in a Dutch oven, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks.
  2. Add the onion, bell pepper, celery, garlic and Cajun seasoning. Cook until vegetables start to soften, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the rice and beef broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat and cook, covered, for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until rice is cooked.
  4. Let the rice sit about 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Sprinkle with the green onions.

I love dirty rice! Some recipes have gizzards in them, but I prefer just ground beef. Though I have had some with gizzards that was delicious. Thanks for sharing this recipe, Gwen Johnson !
