Quick Authentic Indian Flatbread Recipe: So Easy a Beginner Can Make It

A paratha is an Indian flatbread that's fried in oil. This delicious fry bread native to India and several other countries can be eaten alone or with toppings that range from honey, jelly and powdered sugar to fajitas, chicken and beans. In the United States, Navajo tacos are a popular way to serve fry bread, and that's how I discovered this bread on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma.

I ordered a delicious Navajo taco that was topping with ground beef, pinto beans, refried beans, shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, shredded cheese, sour cream and avocado. It was delicious!

Curious about the bread, I tried a recipe for homemade Indian flatbread when we got home. This flatbread recipe is super easy to make! The Indian flatbread is made with flour, salt, baking powder and hot water. After mixing together the ingredients, let them rest for about 30 minutes. The dough is divided into four portions and rolled into a circle. Fry the dough circles in hot oil in a skillet until golden brown on both sides.

How will you eat this Indian flatbread?

Cuisine: Indian
Prep Time: 40 minutes
Cook Time: 4 minutes per flatbread
Total Time: 1 hour (approximately)

Servings: Makes 4

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup hot water
  • vegetable oil, for frying

Here's how to make it:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and baking powder.
  2. Add the hot water. Mix with your hands until it becomes a soft dough. Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into four portions. Roll each portion out on a floured surface into a 6-inch circle.
  4. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet to 375 degrees F. Fry the bread until it is golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
