Pickle Jar Crackers Recipe: This Easy Seasoned Cracker Recipe Starts With a Sleeve of Saltines

Canola oil poured all over crackers? Hmmm. Yep, that's exactly my thoughts when a friend gave me this recipe years ago. But guess what? These seasoned crackers are crisp – and good! Buy that huge jar of dill pickles and use that after it's empty or buy a glass jar at Hobby Lobby or Amazon (see links below). Experience with different ranch dressing flavors and seasonings, and be sure to let the kids help stack the crackers and shake the jar. Now time to get your pickle jar crackers on...

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 24 hours to marinate

You'll need:

Here's how to make them:

Arrange the crackers in the jar standing up.

Combine the canola oil, ranch dressing mix and cayenne. Mix well.

Pour over the crackers. Tilt the jar around as you pour to make sure to get in all the cracks and crevices.

Put on the lid. Allow the crackers to sit at least 24 hours, shaking and rotating the jar on and off, until oil is absorbed.

Made these for Memorial Day. Decided tonight I'm going to crush up what's left and use as a breading for oven-baked fried chicken. I will let ya'll know how it turned out. Fingers crossed...
Julie Rose
Huh? How do they stay crispy?
Donna John
It's crazy, but they do. I'm eating them right now. :-) They're addicting.

What a fun (and delicious) project! The kids would love this. So, Donna John , how did the chicken turn out?? :-)
Donna John
The chicken came out great! Need to see how my photos came out, but will probably publish it tomorrow.

So Donna - THESE ARE AWESOME!!! Took me 2 weeks after I saw this to get the jar but made some yesterday and can't stop eating!!! Wondering - Have you ever tried other spices? Figured I'd ask before I got too brave. ;)
Donna John
So glad you made them and liked them. Aren't they addicting?? Once I used the Fiesta Ranch mix instead of regular. I think smoked paprika or chipotle might be interesting, too. Now you've got me wanting to make some. You can't be too brave! The good thing about this recipe is that it's super cheap to make, so if they don't work out, it doesn't hurt that much. :-)
Elisa Schmitz
How cool that you made these and loved them, L. L. Walters ! Donna John is definitely a food genius, LOL!
L. L. Walters
Yes indeed! Eating some right now... Can't wait to serve them as a football snack! I'll be trying more recipes from Donna for certain. ;)

Agreed with both "addicting" and super cheap! Ok... well, I'm going to "brave" it here soon w/ Old Bay on one batch and a combo of lemon pepper & season salt (which btw is fantastic on chicken too). Will let you know the outcome... And thanks again for terrific recipe! ;)
Meredith Schneider
