The incredible Hungarian goulash recipe is simple to make and is sure to fill up anyone lucky enough to sit down to a plate of it. 

Here's your shopping list for this Hungarian goulash recipe: beef stew meat, onions, Hungarian paprika, tomato paste, garlic and fresh parsley for garnish. The onions and beef stew meat are seasoned with salt, pepper and Hungarian paprika before being browned in a soup pot. The remaining ingredients are added and it is simmered gently for about two hours.

Serve this Hungarian goulash recipe over rice, noodles or potatoes for dinner with crusty bread and a fresh salad. It's even better the next day for lunch.

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • 3 pounds beef stew meat
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Hungarian paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper, or to taste
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 – 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • chopped parsley, for garnish

  • Store the goulash in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat it on the stove over low heat or in the microwave.
  • For a richer goulash, you could use chicken or beef broth instead of water.

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Combine the paprika, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a Dutch oven. Add the onions and cook until soft. Remove and set aside.
  3. Combine the paprika mixture and beef. Mix well. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the same Dutch oven and cook beef until browned on all sides.
  4. Add the onions, tomato paste, water and garlic. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat and cook on low heat, covered, about 2 hours. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve over noodles, potatoes or rice.

I grew up eating "goulash," but my mom made it with rice and ground beef. This looks so good!

It was not gulyas then. Gulyas is a hearty soup. This recipe is for a stew. Porkolt, not for Gulyas soup. Im Hungarian and this recipe is disrespectful

This looks very tasty. However, having been married to a Hungarian, I can attest that Hungarian Goulash (actually spelled Guyas) is a thick beef soup and not a stew!! Hungarians actually get quite upset when beef stew (called Porkot in Hungarian) is referred to as Goulash. Just thought I'd put the record straight ;)

Yeah...well, don't want to spoil the fun but this is not Goulash...
1. Goulash is a soup not a stew.
2. Goulash has potatoes, carrots, parsnips in it but no tomatoes (definitely not can of chopped tomatoes)
3. You serve it with bread (preferably proper loaf not sliced store bought)
It's a very nice recipe, probably delicious meal however it's not Goulash :) Just wanted to clarify :)
Ps: I'm Hungarian living in the UK, my Mum's been cooking this all my life and I've been cooking it for years too :)

Which is recommended: canola, olive, peanut, sesame, veggie, other?

Use your favorite cooking oil. Canola, vegetable or olive oil would be my first choices. Not sesame. You don't want to add any flavor with the oil

A neutral oil, like vegetable oil. But use whatever oil you prefer to cook with. I would not recommend sesame oil.
I am sorry but very bland. My husband added mustard, tobasco. Won't be making this again.

I would gladly try this recipe...looks really appealing! I personally am drawn to using fresh beef chuck tips or chunks whenever I am making a stew, Soup, chili, or goulash. It just has an authentic (beefy) flavor boost. Lean Beef Stew meat works fine for me too. This one is on my "to do" list.

This is winding me up soo much. I'm Hungarian and a qualified chef and this is NOT a gulyas .this is a stew. Gulyas is a rich soup. Do your research before u try to cook something ams find an original recipe for it. This is disgraceful 🤬
