How to Make a Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail (It Dates Back to 1881)

The first Old Fashioned cocktail was served at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Ky., in 1881. Or so the story goes. Here's an easy recipe so you can enjoy this classic cocktail at home.

You'll need:

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the simple syrup, bitters and whiskey in a glass. Stir.
  2. Add a few ice cubes.
  3. Garnish with orange peel and maraschino cherries, if desired. Makes one drink.

As a bartender of 10 years, I think that this is an awesome tip! Old fashioneds are DEFINITELY making a comeback! A little upgrade would be to maybe get some luxardo brand cherries to put in there. They are the best!!! Also, large format ice cubes are MADE for cocktails like this and make it so much more fresh!

I absolutely love Luxardo cherries. I was in Fort Worth last year and ordered a drink and discovered them. You'll never want a regular maraschino cherry again! Morgan Hawthorne
