All you will need to make this Irish soda bread recipe is all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, baking soda, butter, raisins and buttermilk. The ingredients are mixed together to form a dough, then you knead it very briefly for form a smooth ball of dough. The dough is baked on a baking sheet in the oven for about 30 to 40 minutes or until it sounds hollow when thumped.

  • Don't like raisins? Leave them out!
  • Store the bread in an airtight container or plastic food storage bag to keep it fresher longer.
  • You could cover the baking sheet with parchment paper.

Here's how you make it:

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking soda in a bowl.
  2. Cut the butter into the flour until it looks like cornmeal.
  3. Stir in raisins.
  4. Add the buttermilk and egg. Mix well until you have a stiff dough.
  5. Dust your hands and your work surface with some flour. Knead the dough to form a ball.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf. Do not over-knead the dough.
  7. With a sharp knife, cut an X into the top of the loaf.
  8. Put the loaf onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 425-degree F oven until the loaf sounds hollow, about 30 to 40 minutes.
