How Playing Board Games With Kids Helps Language Development by Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP

Playing board games is a great way to enrich your child’s language skills. Not only are they fun, they’re engaging.

  • Choose board games that have pictures so that even non-readers can play.
  • Play the game as directed, but when it’s your child’s turn, ask them to describe the word in three ways or to put the word in a sentence. For example, “It’s a fruit, it grows on a tree and it’s red and round” or “Yesterday, I picked apples at the orchard.”
  • In addition, playing board games helps teach your child about turn taking, patience and sharing.

Plus, it’s a special time to spend with your child!
