Talking to Kids About Coronavirus: How to Use Creativity to Help Children Understand COVID-19 by Trevor Romain

I have heard from many parents about children who are fearful and confused about the coronavirus. I put together a quick, simple, stop-motion animated video to help kids understand the virus, how individuals can work together to protect themselves and others, and how to slow the spread of the virus. Below are a few tips to tell share with kids from the video:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often, but for at least 20 seconds. Sing a song like "Happy Birthday" or the "Alphabet'" song while washing.
  • Sneeze and cough into your elbows. Blocking the tiny droplets that spray from our mouths and noses is how to stop the sickness from getting to the air and infecting others.
  • It's normal to be afraid of things we don't understand. There are tons of grownups to help you if you have the virus or if you're worried or upset about it. Examples of people to reach out to include parents, guardians, siblings, doctors, nurses, medical specialists, friends and extended family members.
  • Draw a lot! Drawing is one way that allows me to de-stress and relax. It also helps me to stay optimistic and keep focused. I bet it would help you, too.
