The Beat Goes On, Even During a Pandemic: Can You Add to My Family's Music Playlist?

As we head further into the unknown, the one thing in our house that remains consistent, reliable and makes us all mostly happy is musicSo as homeschooling mostly wraps for the day, dinner plans are laid out and and that oh-so-welcoming adult beverage slides into our hands. Then, we play an album, record, CD (whatever you want to call it) throughout the house nightly.

Recently, we’ve been reaching back a decade or two or more. Some stuff my wife grew up on, some stuff I grew up on. Some our parents played for us – maybe their parents even played for them – but nonetheless, since we have the time we thought we’d expose the kids to some of our seminal soundtracks.

This isn’t a ranking or an opinion, this is just a unsophisticated list of the 30 older albums two dorky parents with three young kids plan to play in the background for our magic hour.

One a day for the next 30 days, and admittedly, we copped out and did a lot of soundtracks and greatest hits. If the kids enjoy them or not is inconsequential, but we can check off that we did our jobs as parents – and it’s all about us anyway.

We need your help moving forward. What would you listen to? Could you add to ours in case we are in here for a while?

Keep your heads up everyone; we’ll always have great music. We hope you're doing OK out there.

Great idea. How about some classical music to play during meals or before bedtime for relaxation? 🙏
Michael Kennedy
Absolutely.
We do the Calm app at night to wind down and usually classical or theme while were cooking :)
Cassiday
So cool. I want to check out the Calm app, thank you.

I love this, Michael Kennedy ! What is it about music that just makes the world better. Dieter Schmitz and I have been going back to the basics of what makes us feel good. We listen to a lot of Elton John and James Taylor and even Frank Sinatra. We've added in Michael Buble, Harry Connick, Jr. My usual routine is that in the morning, I listen to contemporary music that I sing and dance to as I get ready for the day. Then for happy hour and dinner prep, we switch to the music I listed above. And then always as I get ready for bed, I'm in wind down mode with meditation music, such as from Deva Premal. Thank you for sharing your suggestions, all of which I also love! Sending you and the fam positive energy. Stay well. Wondering what Donna John , Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead , Gigi Gaggero , Meredith Schneider , Holly Budde , Terri Jones , Mike Prochaska , Stephanie Cannoe , Jessica L. Williams , Kandice Cole , Tiffany Zook and others are listening to?
Jessica L. Williams
Love this! I love a good #ThrowbackThursday playlist on Spotify which is updated weekly. For work, I've been like the "Get Chores Done' playlist which is a mix of old and new hits. Let me know if you need links!
Elisa Schmitz
I knew you would have good suggestions, Jessica L. Williams ! I really have to use Spotify more. I tend to reach for Pandora, which I like but I think Spotify might be the move. I'm going to check out your suggested playlists, thank you! Hope you're staying well, amiga!! xoxo

Yes! I usually roll some EDM or Hip Hop when I'm doing chores. If it's family chore hour we do the Hamilton Soundtrack on endless loop!

That's great, love that you and Dieter have happy hour and dinner prep as well! It's the best.
Deva Premal and a candle on a rainy day? Boom.
Hope you're all well.
Elisa Schmitz
Yes, Happy Hour seems to be more important now than ever, ha! Glad you love Deva, too. Great for meditation and rainy days, for sure. Hope you guys are hanging in there, Michael Kennedy . You are a great dad! Dieter Schmitz , any more music suggestions??
Tiffany Zook
The Eagles greatest hits... it’s our job as parents to teach kids Classic Rock!!
(If not, we have failed!). 😂
Happy Hotel California from Texas!
Michael Kennedy
We had that on ....wait for it....8 Track.
Elisa Schmitz
Couldn't agree more, Tiffany Zook . "Hotel California" has a special place in my heart - takes me back to college, LOL! And, I could add to that list of fave college bands: Boston and AC/DC. Michael Kennedy , your kids have not lived until they jam to "Shook Me All Night Long" (or are they too young yet for those lyrics, LOL!)? Dieter Schmitz
Dieter Schmitz
LPs, 45s, reel-to-reel, 8 Tracks - all great delivery modes for the greatest music of all time. Michael Kennedy you gotta add Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. Two of my first cassettes ever bought. Along with Elton John, Eagles, and the Boss. And, now, I get to watch Elisa A. Schmitz 30Seconds dance to all of them!!
Michael Kennedy
Awww yea! Fire it up! We we're just jamming to some Prince! Cheers my man!
ibingz
