1,000 Hour Challenge: Why Parents Need to Take Kids Outside – Even When It's Cold! by Mike Prochaska
Do you take your kids outside when it’s cold? I personally believe that as long as it not dangerous cold, all kids should go outside! I feel better after a short walk on a cold day on my lunch break, and I get my kids outside every day after school.
I can’t image how kids feel when they don’t get to go outside. But I always make sure my children have warm snow pants, gloves, boots and hats.
The best way is to stock your child up with proper clothing and warm-weather gear. Children should be equipped with hats, mittens or gloves. A good option for kids are wraps that cover the head and neck at the same time. When it’s really cold out, dress them in layers. Once they start playing and running around outside, they will be warm (if not hot) and ask to take some of the layers off.
Even if it is below zero, we go outside for 10 to 15 minutes and then come inside and warm up. Most of the time my kids ask to go right back outside. I read that children spend over 1000 hours a year in front of screens. I know winter can be rough sometimes, but I am challenging you to get those kids outside 1000 hours a year.
