Telecommuting: 4 Work-From Home Tips to Help You Feel Less Lonely & More Productive

Working remotely, telecommuting, virtual employee. Whatever you call it, it’s more common than ever for companies to allow alternative work arrangements outside the office.

Since recently moving to a new city with no close friends or family nearby, my non-virtual interactions for the day are sometimes with my dog until my husband arrives home from work. Loneliness can creep its way in, but I’ve found some ways to make my days feel more productive.

Hopefully these tips will work for you as well:

  • Wake up early and use that time to get a few household chores done like walking the dog, washing dishes or running to the grocery store before starting your work day.
  • You may not need a full outfit, but do your regular morning routine as though you are leaving the house: wash your face, brush your teeth, put on a fresh shirt. Seems simple, but it’s so easy to get caught up in the day and forget.
  • Use breaks to run errands or grab some lunch. Get small tasks done or visit a new café or lunch spot you have been wanting to try.
  • Connect with family and friends. Not having a commute gives you time back in your day, and checking in with loved ones will brighten your mood.

Happy telecommuting!

Such great tips, Kelliann Delegro ! I've worked from home since '99. These are spot on. I remember having a conference call in my pajamas. Even on a call, I felt strange and never did it again. Always got dressed for work after that, especially when there were meetings that day. I also used my lunch break to run to the grocery store for dinner stuff or other quick errands. It's important not to forget to take breaks when you work from home. And I still talk to my dog all day. :-) Welcome to the tribe!

So true even as a student. On days that I don’t have class and I can get work done at home I have to make sure I get out of my pajamas, brush my teeth, take breaks and get to the “outside world” at least once!
