Summer Camp Safety: 5 Ways to Help Kids Beat the Heat & Have Fun

Summer camp is a rite of passage for kids. It is also the first chance for many to test-drive independence. Before you ship your child off for a memorable adventure, make sure you cover these outdoor survival basics.

  • Sunscreen for days. Pay no attention to the clouds. Wake, lather and repeat every two hours (or more if you’re wet), every single day.
  • Mellow yellow. Refill water bottles throughout the day to hydrate. Shoot for pee that is somewhere between clear and the color of apple juice.
  • Stay cool. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and don’t forget a hat!
  • Lights out. Uncomfortable tents and crowded cabins can make sleep tricky. Pack a book and a flashlight to help settle down.
  • Still not a fish. Even the best swimmers need a lifeguard.
  • Call on the camp medics. Bug bites, rashes, fevers and sprained ankles are all part of camp, so don’t hesitate to see the health provider on call if something is wrong.

Don’t let a nasty sunburn or complete exhaustion ruin your child’s camp experience. Start with these five basics to help them prepare for the great outdoors!
