Life Can Change on a Dime: How Laundry Can Equal Happiness (Really!) by Michael Kennedy

I was doing my umpteenth load of laundry for the week when these two little socks fell out of the pile – and the way they fell put a smile on my face. I was reminded although crazy, messy, sloppy and silly, these little people are all mine, and they will only go through this cycle of life once. Folding little shirts, hanging tiny dresses and matching mini socks suddenly became a happier affair for me. This is the only particular stretch of time they will be this little, this colorful, this cuckoo and this size.
They will soon outgrow this phase and the clothes they wore through them. It will turn into uniforms, bigger sizes (and smells) and eventually will go away. Seeing this, I also realized the washer, as well as life, should always be half full, not half empty. I try to live in these moments, smile and treasure the alone time, as it could all change on a dime – and it does.
This daily reminder is OK to me. Warm clothes from the dryer, music on and a beverage of choice in hand isn’t a bad way to slow life down and live the moment. Never thought I would say this, but I never want an empty washer. Clean rooms and siblings that get along maybe, but keep the laundry coming.
