Men in Early Childhood Education: My Interview With Canadian Early Childhood Educator Dave Roberts

Dave Roberts works with children at the local school board in Ontario, Canada. He shares why he loves working with kids in the Early Childhood Education profession!

Q. What’s your favorite activity to do with your kids?

“I love being outside and watching and exploring nature with the children. They always see something I never would have thought of.”

Q. What school do you work at or age group do you work with?

“I am currently working with the local school board as an ECE that works together with the teacher in a kindergarten class.”

Q. What’s your favorite book to read to class?

“’The Book With No Pictures’ by B. J. Novak.”

Q. How did you get into this field?

“I was off one day from my previous job, when my wife's friend’s niece (2 years old) came to visit. As they were talking on the patio, I was following the niece around our backyard. I got to see things from a 2-year-old’s perspective and thought what a great way to spend a day. The next semester available I enrolled in the ECE program. I was 50 at the time.”

Q. What do you see as the advantages of having male teachers?

“Parents and children both get to see a male being caring and nurturing with young children.”

Q. Anything else you want to tell us about working with young children?

“Besides that I started at 50 and now am 56. Nope.”

Q. What’s your favorite memory working with kids?

“The great affection they truly do have for you as an educator. They see me as a teacher and someone safe they can trust.”

Q. Do you have any Facebook pages or a blog you would like to share with us?

“ECEs Rock, a group on Facebook. And, of course, Men in Childcare on Facebook.”

Q. Anything else you want to share?

“Wish there was a way to get more men in the field at a younger age.”
