Emotionally Attached to Baby Clothes? Here Are 3 Ways to Let Go of Kid's Outgrown Clothing

As children grow, there's a lot of stuff we need to let go of. For me, this isn't an easy process. There's a lot of emotional baggage tied up in having one child after years of infertility, and realizing within his first year or two of life that it was not likely I'd have another. Here are a few ways I've managed to process those emotions, hold on to the memories and let go of the stuff:

  • Selling Through Garage Sales, Consignment or ThredUp: Touching my sons's clothes in a thoughtful way one last time helps me to let them go. I get to marvel at their size, reflect on the memories and set a side a favorite piece or two for nostalgia's sake. When I sell items, I deposit half of the proceeds for my son, Leo, and put half toward a charm for my Pandora bracelet. I look at my wrist and smile at the memories, and look in his closet and smile at the space.
  • Hand-me-downs: It brings me joy to think of children of loved ones wearing one of Leo's favorite items. Even better if you get to witness an item in use. It creates a connection of happy memories passed down from one child to another.
  • Donation: Passing items on to people who really need them makes letting go feel good!

This is awesome! I love that you save some money for your child and also get yourself a Pandora charm. Wonderful way to preserve the memories, Jen Imbaro ! I kept a few of my favorite items and gave the rest to friends who needed the clothing. That made me feel good, too! 💗

I’m having a quilt made with my favorites. One for each boy or one big one.

Taking a photo of the items is also a good way to let go... same for letting go of kids artwork.
