School Bus Safety: 11 Tips to Keep Kids Safe Before, During & After Riding the School Bus!

According to the National Safety Council, more school-age pedestrians have been killed during the hour before and after school than any other time of day. This is every parents' worst nightmare, so it's important to talk about safety at the bus stop with kids and parents. Here are some bus safety tips:

While waiting for the school bus:

  • Keep kids out of traffic and aware of their surroundings.
  • Do not allow kids to play in the street.
  • Avoid roughhousing or any other behavior that can cause carelessness near the road.

While getting on the school bus:

  • Wait for the bus to stop and the door to open before approaching the bus.
  • Always use the handrail when climbing the bus steps.

While riding the school bus:

  • If the bus has seat belts, buckle up!
  • Don't yell or stand up while the bus is moving to avoid distracting the bus driver.
  • Keep hands, head and arms inside the bus at all times.
  • Keep the aisles clear.

When getting off the school bus:

  • If kids need to cross the street, wait for the driver to signal.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street.

Let's have a safe school year!

So many times I've seen kids playing around in the street when the bus is trying to pull up. These tips are so important, Rachael Daniels . School here starts Wednesday, so this is perfect timing. Parents, you can print this out with the button at the top of the page and share it with other parents, post it on your fridge and even give a copy to your kids. Maybe have them sign it as a pledge to be safe on the school bus.
