As a parent, dropping off my daughter and then my son at college was a major milestone. I remember how hard it was to say goodbye. And I remember that feeling I had when the same question ran through my mind the entire way home: “Did I do all that I could to prepare them?”
It's not uncommon for parents to prepare their kids academically, financially and even physically. All of these things are good and helpful, but according to The First-Year College Experience Survey, we often miss helping our kids prepare emotionally.
This summer, help your student explore how they are feeling – going beyond excited or scared. If they can put it into words, it is less likely to catch them off guard later. Practice validating their feelings and helping them understand the value in all their feelings.
