Autism Awareness: 5 Things Parents With an Autistic Child Wish You Knew

One of my sons, Everson, is on the spectrum and nonverbal. While it is hard to parent a nonverbal autistic child, it is even more difficult to manage the judgments and misunderstandings that come from a lack of awareness or acceptance.

Here are five tips that autism moms and dads wish all people understood:

  1. Every single person on the planet has "autistic-like characteristics." Read the book Uniquely Human by Barry M. Prizant.
  2. All children, autistic or not, have innocent and positive intentions.
  3. All people, including autistic children, like being spoken to and interacted with in their own ways.
  4. Parents of ASD kids like being asked questions.
  5. Please don't say, "I'm sorry," when I tell you my child has autism.

Autism is just a different way of being human.
