Are Kids Born With Empathy or Is It Learned? Here's the Scoop!

Empathy is your ability to connect and relate to others. It's that feeling you get when you are so connected, you can actually sense what they might be experiencing. Neuroscience suggests that we have been created with a desire to connect through empathy, and while for some it comes naturally, empathy also can be taught. A Harvard study showed that, unconsciously, we often imitate others as part of our social functioning. Knowing that, here are ways to boost empathy:

  • Learn from someone you think of as being empathetic. Notice how they respond toward others.
  • Practice showing empathy toward your family members. Help them experience receiving empathy.

Imagine how different our families and communities would be if we all slowed down enough to consider how someone else might be feeling. Read more about the empathy study here!
