Entrepreneur Amy Risley Has Found the SweetSpot in Personal Care

SweetSpot Labs was created to meet the needs of estheticians who were looking for safe and gentle hygiene products to use before and after waxing. Today, the company offers a variety of products designed to help women feel fresh, clean and confident. I had the chance to talk with Amy Risley, the founder, president and CEO of SweetSpot Labs, about how the company has expanded far beyond post-wax skin treatments.

Q. Can you expand upon the inspiration for the line?

"We put body chemistry at the center of our personal-care collections. We use clean and natural ingredients, and consciously formulate with health and wellness as the priority. While our heritage began in some of North Americas top spas, today we are proud to be a part of everyone's busy life from the minute they get up and take a shower, to freshening up with a gentle wipe after the gym or after intimacy.

"We are streamlining wellness and daily cleansing routines. Unlike traditional body washes on the market that use a lot of fragrance, SweetSpot Labs uses less than 1 percent, which is just enough to create a luxurious experience without drying or irritating your most intimate areas. We also have an unscented wash too. We also don't use glycerin – a sugar based ingredient that yeast and bacteria loves."

Q. Which products did you start with and how has the line expanded?

"Building on the success of our natural pH-balanced Gentle Washes and Gentle Wipes, we launched SweetSpot Labs Buff & Brighten Body Exfoliating Pads, which quickly became a top seller! These oversized pads are formulated to exfoliate the skin pre-or post-wax or shave and are designed to be used all over the body to banish Brazilian born bumps and brighten skin. Buff & Brighten also helps with shadowing (dark spots) around intimate areas showing discoloration. The great thing about SweetSpot Labs is that our wipes, washes and body exfoliator can be used all over the body."

Q. Why is a woman's chemistry special and how do the SweetSpot products address those special needs?

"Our intimate skin chemistry is different than the skin on the rest of our bodies. For example, a healthy vagina has a pH between 4 and 4.5, but traditional body washes and soaps can upset that natural chemistry because they have the wrong pH, are heavily fragranced and use glycerin. SweetSpot Labs is consciously clean and does not use glycerin, sulfates, propylene glycol, MIT preservatives, parabens, phthalates, gluten, cassein or soy. These ingredients have the potential to irritate and throw off a our natural balance. SweetSpot Labs products are also vegan and cruelty-free."

Q. What are some of your favorite products/ingredients and why are they integral to the line?

"I've always loved our washes! They are so beautiful I even wash my face with them. Using only the highest-quality clean ingredients our formulas are designed to be kind to the sensitive pelvic region while cleansing and softening skin and hair all over the body. Natural ingredients in our washes like coconut cleansers, apricot kernel oil and pro-vitamin B5 work together to deliver a better cleansing experience that replaces synthetic ingredients found in traditional body-care products. If it's in our formula, it has a purpose."
