When I taught first grade, I’d see kids bouncing with excitement as Halloween approached. Enthusiasm is one of the magical aspects of childhood; however, our kids benefit from guidance as to when – and how – to contain their excitement and stay out of the principal’s office! Here's how to help kids balance their elation with self-control:

• Dedicate 10 minutes to talk about Halloween, then move on to another topic.

• Guide them to “gather” their thoughts about Halloween in their hands, bundle them up and set this imaginary package on a shelf on their brains.
