Pregnancy Glow: Here Are 2 Reasons Why Moms-to-Be May Shine While They're Pregnant

How many times has someone told you that you’re “glowing,” Mom-to-be? Probably a lot. But is that pregnancy glow a real thing or just something people have been programmed to say when they see a baby bump?

According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), “The specific cause for the pregnancy glow is not concrete, but there is solid educated explanations that suggest it is related to a couple of physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.” So it sounds like that glow is real. But why?

  • Skin Changes: “The pregnancy glow is one of the skin changes that is caused by the changes and increase of hormones during pregnancy,” says the APA. The skin changes are a result of the influx of pregnancy hormones. “These hormones cause your glands to produce more oil, which makes your face more shiny.” So shiny equals glowing!
  • Blood Flow: Another factor, says the APA, is the increase in blood flow your body is dealing with. Blood flow increases by about 50 percent during pregnancy. “The proposed theory is that this increase in blood flow and circulation leads your face to be brighter, or more fuller,” says the APA.

The Mayo Clinic agrees, but adds, “The factors that contribute to pregnancy glow can have a downside, however. Fluctuating hormone levels during pregnancy might make you more prone to acne.” To help keep acne at bay, try these acne-fighting tips:

  • Exfoliate weekly.
  • Soothe with serums.
  • Don’t skip moisturizer.
  • Balance skin with a toner.
  • Do a mask every week.
  • Spot treat and refrain from picking.
